"The Mortification of Sin" by John Owen is a masterpiece on how to kill corruption in one's personal life. Less than 100 pages long, it is packed with insightful thinking regarding sanctification. Owen packs much into "The Mortification of Sin," while still managing to leave many rocks just turned over so that the reader can search for himself. In "The Mortification of Sin," Owen covers nine preliminary steps to overcoming. ( 1) Consider the dangerous symptoms of your lust; (2) Get a clear sense of the guilt and danger of the sin; (3) Load your conscience with the guilt of the "perplexing distemper"; (4) Have a vehement desire for deliverance; (5) Determine whether the sin is rooted in your natural temperament; (6) Prevent the opportunities for sin; (7) Vigorously oppose the first actings of sin; (8) Think deeply about the majesty of God; ( 9) Speak no peace to your own disquieted heart - let God speak it. These principles form the bulk of "The Mortification of Sin," yet are fenced in by strong opposition to the legalistic methods of dealing with sin and with hearty exhortations to focus on Christ and be empowered by the Spirit in the whole task of mortifying sin. "The Mortification of Sin" is an excellent treatment of the subject and worthy of repeated readings.

Great book and a must read for Christians. Language can be difficult, especially if you do not read a King James Bible because you think it's too difficult to understand. I use KJV, so it was almost on par with that in it's choice of language. Don't let that discourage you, read it anyway.

The Mortification of Sin A Puritan Guide John Owen 9781449945657 Books Reviews

John Owen challenges the reader to mortify his sins and follow Christ. He tackles most areas of our sinfulness and shows how we can crucify them to the cross of Christ. Written in a different style, you may think of tossing it aside but I promise, you will be spiritually renewed and changed if you stick with it.
John Owen makes the best argument I've ever read about needing to be vigilant, searching, and fearless, for observing one's sin and asking the Holy Ghost for help, because due to our sin nature, we cannot stem the tide of the crushing weight of our sins. Only Jesus' sacrifice obtained forgiveness, and in striving to be holy as Our Father is holy, we need help. The only thing I don't like about the book is it's left in period English, which is laborious reading. Anyone interested in the nature of, and dealing with, sin should read this.
It took me awhile to finally read and understand the message of this book. At first it seemed so discouraging but when I finally understood that every single step is a work of God Himself, it became the only hope of my soul. Rightly understood, this message is the Gospel.
Deep, rich, and dripping with God-centered, Christ-exalting, Spirit-empowering and Bible-saturated content. Took me over 3 years to complete these few pages as God would graciously help me meditate on a few pages at a time. So precious. Can’t wait to read it again. “Thank You, Lord, for this book. May those who love Your glory learn how to mortify their sin so that they may be satisfied in You completely and thus glorify You supremely.”
When I first started reading this book, I had a profound sense of disappointment over the abridgment of this work by John Owen. It was as if it did not remain consistent with his writing style. But, maybe I was the one at fault for looking down over the modification and idolizing Owen's highly technical writing. For that, I do apologize.

Having said all that, the message and content of the book is not diminished whatsoever. Richard Rushing did an excellent job maintaining the gist of the book. It still cuts to the sinful state of our hearts, convicts us of our sin and sinful attitudes, and exhorts us on what we must do as believers to mortify sin and grow in Christ.

It is my conviction that Owen would have approved of the updated language so that his readers would grow and continue to be sanctified in Christ. After all, he was known for actually sitting in on a few sermons that John Bunyan preached and appreciating Bunyan's simple yet poignant sermon deliveries.

Thus, I STRONGLY recommend this book to every Christian.
This is one of only 2 books that I can think of that has made me bring forth the water works. Especially chapter 12 on Humility. The Mortification of Sin is a cut straight to the heart. It forced me to consider the hypocritical nature of my preaching one thing and practicing another. It is not a self help book or even a how to book. The answer is to look to God. It is a complimentary book to Communion with God, and once you begin reading this book you will understand why. Owen hits why we sin, what happens when we sin, and our part in ridding our life of it.
Quotes from this entry include

"The choicest believers, who are assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin, ought yet to make it their business all their days to mortify the indwelling power of sin."

"Mortification from a self-strength, carried on by ways of self-invention, unto the end of a self-righteousness, is the soul and substance of all false religion in the world."

"...the mortification of indwelling sin remaining in our mortal bodies, that it may not have life and power to bring forth the works or deeds of the flesh is the constant duty of believers."

"If sin be subtle, watchful, strong, and always at work in the business of killing our souls, and we be slothful, negligent, foolish, in proceeding to the ruin thereof, can we expect a comfortable event? There is not a day but sin foils or is foiled, prevails or is prevailed on; and it will be so whilst we live in this world."

"The greatest part of popish religion, of that which looks most like religion in their profession, consists in mistaken ways and means of mortification."

"...unless a man be regenerate, unless he be a believer, all attempts that he can make for mortification, be they never so specious and promising, -- all means he can use, let him follow them with never so much diligence, earnestness, watchfulness, and intention of mind and spirit, -- are to no purpose."

"...be sure to get an interest in Christ; if you intend to mortify any sin without it, it will never be done."

"If we will do any thing, we must do all things. So, then, it is not only an intense opposition to this or that peculiar lust, but a universal humble frame and temper of heart, with watchfulness over every evil and for the performance of every duty, that is accepted."

"He, then, that would really, thoroughly, and acceptably mortify any disquieting lust, let him take care to be equally diligent in all parts of obedience, and know that every lust, every omission of duty, is burdensome to God, though by one is so to him."

"Sometimes in reading of the word God a man stay on something that cuts him to the heart, and shakes him as to his present condition. More frequently in the hearing of the word preached, his great ordinance for conviction, conversion, and edification, doth he meet with men. God often hews men by the sword of his word in that ordinance, strikes directly on their bosom-beloved lust, startles the sinner, makes him engage unto the mortification and relinquishment of the evil of his heart."

"The excellency of a believer is, not that he hath a large apprehension of things, but that what he doth apprehend, which perhaps may be very little, he sees it in the light of the Spirit of God, in a saving, soul-transforming light; and this is that which gives us communion with God, and not prying thoughts or curious-raised notions."
Great book and a must read for Christians. Language can be difficult, especially if you do not read a King James Bible because you think it's too difficult to understand. I use KJV, so it was almost on par with that in it's choice of language. Don't let that discourage you, read it anyway.
